Committed Stones just lose out
Stones win back some respect but the points go to Harrow
Stones showed some real commitment today taking on recently crowned league champions Harrow St Mary's. We've run them close twice before this season and this would be no different.
We played as a team and gave as good as we got. In a first half of few chances we went behind to a speculative shot from Harrow. It felt a bit of an injustice as we were ourselves unlucky not have converted a couple of half chances earlier on. Unlike recent weeks we galvanized and didn't let it get to us. Oliver Smith had been handed to arm band and kept the boys focused with positive encouragement continuously.
Clean through on goal we won a penalty, we've not got a great record with pens and this was to be no different. Almost too good a shot as it sliced off the post and went wide. You could sense Harrows relief but against we re grouped and carried on. Half time and 0-1.
I asked the boys to step up the tackling, just 5% more from each boy. Keep the ball wide out of the mud and then just build on the first half performance.
2nd half underway and we looked good. In fact we were better than good. We had the game by the scruff of the neck, we were in control and the next goal looked like it would only come from us. But then a defensive lapse. We cleared a ball but simply didn't challenge for the 2nd phase. We stood off and watch a well struck shot curl beyond Jack and in to the top corner. 0-2!!
But we didn't give up, the boys pulled together and battled on. We got a deserved goal back late on when Oliver's free kick ricocheted off the bar and to the feet of Marcus who wasted no time in smacking it in. 1-2..
The final whistle came almost immediately after and St Mary's breathed a sigh of relief as they started there celebrations as Champions. Well done to them but we have to take a huge positive here. We matched them everywhere today and have a right to feel a little hard done by.
Lets pick up next week and close the league out with a big win...
