Stones Freeze Out St Andrews
Boys back on track to take the points
On a day where temperatures dipped and stayed mostly below zero we needed a quick start in this one.
With St Andrews marginally winning the possession battle we were holding our own but hadn't yet threatened goal. On our first attack we won a free kick just outside the box. The first attempt cannoned in to the defensive wall but Jordan was quick to follow up and fired a well aimed shot in to the bottom corner, 1-0 Stones.
We threatened further and soon won a penalty when a St Andrews defender clumsily barged into Jordan's back. Up stepped Gareth to smash home the spot kick and at 2-0 we had a cushion. But we backed off and were lucky to get to the break with a score line secure. I told the boys next goal was crucial. St Andrews had enjoyed some good possession at the end of that half and were unlucky not to have scored when they missed a glorious chance from 6 yards. We had to get back to the same mentality we had at kick off.
Second half underway and the game was balanced but we were competing well in the middle and proving what we have long known which is when we win the midfield we generally win the game. A strong run from Samir on the left and he put in great cross to Tom who met it first time with left foot volley to put us 3-0 up. St Andrews were deflated by this and the game was really done and dusted. There was though still time for them to grab one back when we got caught in possession with most of the team out of position. A great shot from one of their strikers to get the score to 3-1 but it was too late for a comeback and the 3 points were ours. A decent pay back for the reverse fixture before Xmas when we didn't do ourselves justice by losing 2-1
