U11B Wealdstone 3-2 TFA Totteridge

A win from 2 nil down.

Wealdstone 3-2 TFA Totteridge

Up against a team whom we had already had a narrow victory and defeat against this season the boys showed great character to fight back from two nil down to record another victory. With Totteridge only able to field 8 players it was decided before the game to play 8v8 in order to keep the game fair. This resulted in a change of formation for the blues and it showed in the opening exchanges as the boys struggled to get to grip with the new shape. The opening half of the game was a cagey affair with both teams having a share of the ball but not really creating much. We only ever looked in trouble when we failed to attack the loose ball and let it bounce but other than that Jamie, Danny and Oscar, in front of them were keeping it tight and not letting Totteridge threaten our goal. Going forward Fred S and Ryan were working hard on the wings both going forward and getting back and Liam was providing a good link between Midfield and Attack for Michael. Despite looking comfortable we would go on to concede the first goal. There looked to be little danger when Danny chased a ball back into our corner and rolled the ball to Jack only for the ball to bobble on the pitch just as Jack kicked resulting in an unfortunate miscue which Totteridge punished with the first goal, 0-1 and not what we deserved. The boys regrouped and tried to get back into the game but after an attack broke down, their goalie launched another big kick down field which we failed to attack and the ball ran through for their striker to finish well past Jack, 0-2. Despite the score line we continued to work hard and it nearly paid off, the two Freds (S&G) linked up well on the right and Fred G picked a pass through to Michael whose shot was turned round the post by the keeper for a corner. From the corner Fred G found Tommy on the front post who controlled turned and crossed excellently to the back post where Jamie came running in and finished brilliantly on the half volley with the outside of his right foot into the near top corner, 1-2 and no more than we deserved. Half time came and after a few words of encouragement the boys were back out for the second half and at it straight away. We continued in the same fashion with us enjoying more of the game but Totteridge were always a threat on the break. A shuffle at half time saw Alex come into defence along side Jamie and he slotted in well looking strong and keeping Totteridge at bay whenever they broke. Despite the pressure we couldn’t get the breakthrough, the Totteridge keeper was in good form and produced one particular great save. A good cross on the right from Fred G found its way to the back post where Tommy connected sweetly only for the keeper to brilliantly block the ball away for a corner. It seemed as if it would take something special to get us back on level terms and it certainly was special when it came. Fred G took a corner on the left and as it was cleared away to the corner of the box he ran in and smashed a curling drive first time back into the far top corner with the keeper having no chance, 2-2 and a great goal to get us level. With the scores now level we were hunting for a winner and another reshuffle saw Danny slot into attack alongside Michael to try and give us more presence up front. We continued to press without really making any clear chances but we would find a way to get a winner. Some good pressure form midfield saw us force the Totteridge defence into an error and Michael, after blocking a clearance, was able to get clear and finish well over the advancing keeper, 3-2 and some jubilant scenes on the sidelines as all the boys celebrated together. With about ten minutes left to play we still had to stay switched on as Totteridge pressed for an equaliser. Jack was forced into a couple of good saves, one very good, reacting well at a corner and our defence continued to hold firm with Jamie, Alex, Danny and Ryan all making important challenges to keep us in front. Despite the Totteridge pressure we would come closest to scoring again with Michael forcing another good save from the Totteridge keeper after some great link up play with Tommy and Liam coming closest of all when he thumped a header against the bar. The final whistle came and we had produced a great comeback to win 3-2. Great spirit showed from the boys who never let their heads drop despite going two down and it really was a great team effort to come back with all of the boys playing their part in getting the victory they deserved. Their team spirit played a part in them getting the victory today and this was shown in the team celebrations when the third goal went in, which was great to see. Special mention for the three goals we scored, all were excellently taken with the first two equally brilliant in technique (Jamie) and pure power and accuracy (Fred G). Man of the match was awarded to Michael who ran his socks off as usual and thanks to Matt for linesman duties. A great team effort from all the boys, one to be proud of again ⚽⚽⚽
