Wealdstone 0 - 2 Wembley Youth

Blues come unstuck in bruising encounter.

The blues four match winning streak was brought to end with a tough 2-0 defeat at the hands of Wembley on a relatively mild morning at Sidmouth Drive. After last weeks cancellation the boys seemed well up for the game but within five minutes we found ourselves 1-0 down. A free kick was given half way in our half and a good delivery was met by an unmarked Wembley player who side footed home from close range leaving Jack with no chance. The early set back seemed to fire us up and we put Wembley under pressure for the rest of the half. We had a number of corners that Fred G delivered well into the box but we failed to get on the end of any and we had a few half chances that never really came to much. The tone of the match seemed to be set when we lost Alex to injury mid way through the half after catching one of many late tackles, this would be a theme throughout the whole game that seemed to unsettle us. Our best chance of the first half came when Fred S sent Michael in on the keeper, he did well to get round him but the keeper forced him wide and his effort was cleared away for another corner. Despite being one down we never looked like conceding with Jamie and Ryan both working really hard as usual and clearing any danger. Half time came with us trailing 1-0 having dominated but not really threatened the Wembley goal. The second half continued in much the same fashion as the first, we were getting on top in midfield with Oscar beginning to find his feet and Tommy and Yusef were getting to see more of the ball on wings. Just like the first half though despite all the pressure we still couldn’t find the goal, Tommy went close on a couple occasions with the keeper making some important stops and there were a few goal mouth scrambles where the ball just didn’t fall to us. We still looked comfortable at the back, Ahmad was putting in some great tackles to stop Wembley coming forward. Again our best chance of the half would fall to Michael, who after beating his man was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post and away to safety, it was looking like not being our day ! As the game came towards the end we were grateful to Jack for a great diving save after Wembley got in behind but he could do nothing when their midfielder beat two of our players in the box before firing in for 2-0. We tried hard in the last five minutes to get back into the game but it was not to be our day and we tasted defeat for the first time since Christmas. A tough and sometimes unfriendly game against a tough opposition who just seemed to be up for the fight a bit more but we know as a team we could have won if we had played to our usual standards. The boys all tried hard but it was just one of those days where nothing seemed to go for us and we just lacked a little bit of our usual quality. Man of the Match was Jamie who again controlled our back line and stopped any danger when Wembley came forward. Thanks to Nick for Linesman duties and I am sure we will be back to our best next week.
