Wealdstone Battle To Twelve League Wins In A Row In Tough Conditions...
Wealdstone Youth C 3 - 1 Pitshanger B
Today's game was against our league rivals Pitshanger B, a very good side that pushed us all the way this season. We came into the game looking to make up for our previous result against the same opposition and also claim another victory that will take us closer to becoming Under 12 champions. Another win would take us to an unmatched league record of 12 consecutive wins in a row.
Game kicked off and you could sense the tension between both teams. The opposition were playing the long ball game and with the strong winds blowing and throwing the ball in all directions, we found it hard to get into any rhythm and couldn't get our game going. We struggled to deal with the balls over the top and once in possession we didn't seem to coping with the conditions well enough, being sloppy with possession and not pressing the opposition high enough. It eventually cost us after another long ball final caught us out and conceded an avoidable goal. The players never gave up and we were back level soon after, a ball played through the middle found Harry who showed great composure and scored a goal worthy of any academy level player. We then found ourselves under pressure again, our defence of George, Elliott, Ethan, Oliver and Ben R came under serious pressure, but Ben R pulled off numerous saves to keep us in the game, showing great leadership and strength the keep the score level. The players came off looking mentally tired, but still very much in the game.
Half-Time; 1-1 Wealdstone Youth FC.
Second half started and with some encouraging words, the players came out a little more focused and it showed. A few changes at the break we ware back on the front foot applying pressure from both wings. Kavin, George working well and Elliott, Ethan controlling the middle and shutting off all attacks. There was a lot of back and forth with neither team able to break through each other's defence. Nerves were clear to see as the game was at a balance and after missing some clear cut chances to extend the lead, the ball fell to Daniel who found himself in the middle of the area, turning a defender and slotting into the corner. The pressure was now on the opposition and as they pushed it left them open at the back, with a long ball of our own found its way to Harry who ran through and rounded the keeper to slot home his second of the game and 40th (Milestone) of the season to ease the pressure off the team and see us out to victory. Not the best performance but the players showing they have the character to come through tough games.
Final-Score; 3-1 Wealdstone Youth FC.
Player Of The Match; Ben R.
