A battling performance against the wind and Cademy
By Andrew Bell
Beaten 3-2 by an unlucky own goal in the last minute
It was a very windy morning, but after a number of cancelled games Wealdstone Under 9 whites were pleased to see the Sidmouth pitch was in good condition. Kicking into the wind for the first half, Wealdstone battled well and matched Cademy who have a strong team. A great save from James when the striker was one on one gave Wealdstone encouragement and a few quick breaks gave Wealdstone opportunities. However we went into half time 1-0 down after conceding to a long strike, but given the conditions that felt a good situation. 2nd half we pressed forward much more, with Patrick, Harry and Oliver pressing down the wings and Adam using his vision to create moves from the centre midfield. We were struggling in the conditions to get shots on target and at the other end need a good save and Harrison in goal and to be fast off his line on a few occasions to keep the score 1-0. Then from a move down the left, the ball came out to George who struck it sweetly from outside of the area, and past the goalkeeper, 1-1. The 4th quarter saw more attacking at both ends and Cademy took the lead with a cross from their right, volley from just inside the area into the back of our net. Wealdstone pressed and a quick kick out from Harrison found Patrick who slotted it past their keeper, route one! 2-2.
Then with 2 minutes remain Wealdstone pushed forward looking for the winner, but couldn't get past the keeper. Cademy booted it up field and counter attacked, winning a corner. Crossing it in, Aidan jumped and managed to get his head on the ball, but as it looped up and caught in the wind it sailed into the goal, leaving Harrison stranded and impossible for the defenders to get back and clear. The ref blew his whistle and Wealdstone were left very disappointed after a good battling performance. Man of the match : George.
