Wealdstone U9 White vs London Athletic
By Aidan King
Another good win for Wealdstone and this time no nail biting waiting for the final whistle
This was our first meeting against London Athletic in the league, we had played them previously in a couple of tournaments which had seen Athletic beat us on both occasions. League football is completely different to tournament football and they would need to be a very good team to beat us again. This match was our first match at our new home ground in Sidmouth Drive, the pitch surface was very good although there is a couple of dips in the ground to keep the boys on their toes. The one benefit is that we now have permanent goals which means no more lugging the goals in and out of the container. The weather was once again windy and cold but dry.
London Athletic took the kick off. Oliver picked the ball up in defence and moved into midfield before playing a ball through to Troj, Troj took a low shot across the Goalkeeper which struck the post and went in (1-0). Wealdstone break with Stevie passing to Harry W but his shot was deflected wide. Athletic with some good passing left Harry S isolated but he read the situation well and cleared. Athletic good pressure from a Wealdstone goal kick which saw them have a shot just over. Troj tracked a defender with the ball tackled him dragged the ball back onto his left foot and shot and scored (3-0). Athletic with a break and a shot which went over. Full time.
The game was a close game, much closer than the score line suggests. London Athletic were a very competent team who played some good passing moves and had a lot of shots on goal. They did seem to be very reliant on their team shooting from long distance and most of their chances were shots from outside of the area, this tactic saw them shoot wide a lot or give Owen relatively easy balls to deal with. London Athletic were also a very physical side who may be able to bully some teams but Wealdstone held their own throughout, the boys showed good resilience to some poor tackling and kept on going. The boys are playing very well as a team and are countering every different style of play that is put up against them, it seems whatever happens in the game at the moment we are up to it and able to find a way to win.
The result of this game is quite significant in the fact that it is the first league game we have played and kept a clean sheet, well played boys - hopefully this will be the first of many.
