8 goal thriller in last 8 !!!

Wealdstone travelled 45 minutes to Whetstone panthers in the last 8 of the county cup today looking to book a place in the last 4 for the second consecutive season. The team to start Jake, Luke, George Little, Lewis H, David, Domm, Ryan, Jacob and Reece. 6 of the starting 9 played in a very difficult Hillingdon district game the day before winning 1-0 courtesy of a Lewis Hartley penalty his 11th of the season for club and district.

Today was always going to be difficult some tired legs a very heavy pitch and a very good opposition. The game started end to end With Jake making 2 or 3 good saves early on and Jacob and Reece forcing the opposition keeper into some good saves too. The first goal of the game came from Mr Cool and again from the spot, great running by Reece who was fouled by the keeper and the ref had no option but to award a spot kick. Lewis Hartley stepped up and smashed his effort into the net 12 from 12 for club and district.
Moment later it was 2-0 a delightful chip through ball by Ryan was met by Jacob who then clipped the ball past the keeper and into the net. Wealdstone were now in control and creating lots of chances Reece had 2 very good efforts blocked on the line the keeper pulled off a couple of good saves, George little had a volley from a corner over the bar as we pressed very well.
The game then looked over another great run By Jacob who slid the ball under the keeper and into the net to put the stones 3-0 up, it really could and should have been 5 or 6. Then some sloppy defending in the last seconds of the first half gave Whetstone a lifeline, George miss clearing the ball and Luke bringing down the striker and again the ref rightly awarded a penalty kick. Jake guessed right but was unable to make the save.

In a thrilling first half it was Whetstone 1 Wealdstone 3.

The second half started with Wealdstone slow and giving the ball away cheaply and soon were pegged back to 3-2 a fantastic volley from outside the area into the net from Whetstone and suddenly it was game on. Whetstone pilled on some pressure but Luke, George and Lewis stood firm Domm, Ryan and David kept working and as always Reece never gave the defence a moments peace. Wealdstone then grabbed a deserved 4th goal a fantastic free kick from Domm 20 yards out over the wall and the keeper in off the underside off the cross bar brilliant stuff 4-2.
There was still more hearts in mouth stuff to come as Wealdstone tired Whetstone grabbed a third with 5 minutes to play to make it a very nervy remainder of the game at 4-3. With Whetstone pilling every player forward Wealdstone had 3 0r 4 good break chances on the break but did not capitalise until the last minute when Jacob completed his hat trick following a well saved effort from Lee. This eased the pressure in the last minute and gave the stones a very deserved semi final place to look forward too.

Well done and good luck to Whetstone for the rest of the season great side.

Lads Man of the match I asked a few parents and they all said exactly the same thing Jacob and Domm well done everyone a tremendous team spirit and we gave absolutely everything as always.
