U11B Wealdstone 3-2 TFA Totteridge
A win to start the Phase
Wealdstone 3-2 TFA Totteridge
Up against the team whom we faced in our first match of the season the boys avenged an unfortunate 2-1 defeat with a gutsy performance for a deserved win.
We were down to the bare bones as we only had 9 players fit and available for the game but the boys started the game fully on the front foot and were soon creating chances. Fred S and Michael were causing problems on the wings with Fred S in particular putting in some great crosses and Michael's direct running constantly pushing Totteridge back. Fred G was proving a real handful for the Totteridge back line and it was he who set up the first goal of the game. Good hold up play was followed by a clever through ball played into Michael who saw his first effort saved but followed up with the rebound that the keeper could only parry up and into the corner of the net, fully deserved 1-0. More pressure followed from the blues, the midfield battle was being won by Oscar and Liam and it seemed that Totteridge were not getting out of their own half. The hard work was soon rewarded with another goal, a free kick was won on the left corner of the area and Fred S lined up to take it only to lay it off to the side to Fred G who angled a brilliant drive into the far top corner that their keeper could only watch as it sailed by, 2-0 in some style. We continued to create chances and some more great crosses were put in by Fred S and Ryan but we failed to convert them into goals. Half time came and we were deservedly in front 2-0, our dominance outlined by Jack saying how cold he was at half time. The second half started slowly and Totteridge began to get back into the game. They won a corner which was played to the near post and their striker showed good strength to hold off our defenders and hit a shot into the roof of the net, 2-1. The slope and the wind were beginning to take its toll and were coming under more and more pressure but we seemed to be dealing with it, Jamie in particular cleaning up at the back with great assurance on several occasions and when they did get through Jack produced a couple of good saves to keep them out. As the half wore on we began to get back on top and started to create some more chances which we failed to convert and from one such attack we were undone for the equaliser. The attack broke down and their goalkeeper launched a big kick which cleared our defence and allowed their striker to get through on Jack and poke the ball into the corner, 2-2. Despite being pegged back the boys showed great heart to keep going and created several more chances with their keeper being forced into some good saves to keep the scores level. With five minutes left it looked as though it would be honours even but then Danny won the ball with another excellent tackle at the back and fed the ball up field where it found its way to Fred G on the right wing, he took the ball on before sliding it across the centre to an unmarked Michael who slid in in front of the keeper to turn the ball home, 3-2. To Totteridge's credit they came at us again from kick off but the back three of Ryan, Jamie and Danny held firm and we saw out the last few minutes to hold on for the win. A great display by the boys who never gave up despite what must have been a very tiring game with no subs, every one of them put in a shift and all contributed to the final result. Man of the match went to Fred G for two assists and a fabulous long range strike. Thanks to Paul for linesman duties
