Whites in Goal fest for second week.
Another good crowd turned out to watch the whites go down 3-4 in heartbreaking fashion due to a last minute penalty. The game started well with us on top but unable to find that final ball to break the Hanwell defence. As the half continued Hanwell began to come into the game and would take the lead, a bouncing ball into the area was not dealt with and the Hanwell striker was able to head over Jack and into the net, 0-1. We were not playing well at this point and were thankful to some good defending by Jamie and Jack to keep the score at 0-1. We created a couple of half chances but nothing came of it and we went in at the break 0-1. The second half started and you could tell straight away the boys were looking to put in a better performance and it wasn’t long before we were level. Callum W who was looking strong in the centre got to a clearance first and headed the ball forward to Michael who finished first time past the advancing keeper, 1-1 and no more than our start to the second half deserved. We continued to play well everyone was fighting for the ball, Fred G was having a good second half at left back and making some important challenges and we were getting control of midfield. Despite the dominance we would soon find ourselves 1-2 down, a long ball caught out our defence and their striker got to the ball first to poke past Jack into the net. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of us for a few minutes and we soon were further behind. A free kick on the right was delivered to the back post and there was a Hanwell player unchallenged at the back post to head in, 1-3. This seemed to rally the boys into life and we again began to take control of the game. It wasn’t long before we reduced the deficit. A good tackle by Fred G saw the ball break to Jamie and he sent the ball through for Michael who finished well over the keeper, 2-3. We continued to push and would have half chances for Liam, Callum F and Daniel but we just couldn’t find the final touch or finish to get level. However, after some good pressure in midfield Bailey got away on the keeper who made a good save at his feet only for the ball to break to Callum F whose shot took a slight deflection (Bailey swears off him) and the ball rolled into the corner, 3-3 and no more than we deserved. For the last five minutes it looked as if there was only one team who were going to win but agin we just lacked that little bit of composure in front of goal. As the clocked ticked over into the last minute Hanwell had a last attack, their player broke into the box alongside Danny who used his strength to get to the ball first only for the Hanwell player to go down. Unfortunately the ref has decided it was a foul and pointed to the spot. After a little discussion around the decision the penalty was taken and brilliantly saved by Jack only for the ball to fall agonisingly back to their player who put away the rebound. Very hard on Jack and the whole team. We still had time for one last corner but it came to nothing and the final whistle went, 3-4. Another exciting game that we didn’t deserve to lose after our second half performance and we should be proud of all the boys efforts, they all gave everything. Callum W was voted man of the match after a strong performance in the centre and special mention for Fred G who had a great second half at left back. Thanks to Paul for doing the flag and Rob for reffing in the first half (shame it wasn’t the whole game). Another close game and I’m sure if we can continue to improve and tighten up a bit at the back the wins will come. ⚽️⚽️⚽️
